Johnny Depp portrayed The Mad Hatter in both 2010 movie and 2016 movie. Although he is never referenced as 'The Mad Hatter' in either of Carroll's books, the Hatter is portrayed as 'mad' and hence has become known as such. As Alice and the March Hare are the only other individuals to appear in both books, he can be considered a principal character.
